Ultra-processed food are foods which have undergone significant food processing, usually by large "Big food" corporations. Ultra-processed foods go through substantial industrial processing and contain a long list of ingredients on the packet. Typically, they have color- and taste- enhancers, preservatives and sweeteners.

That means almost half of the food we eat every day has been significantly changed from its original state, with salt, sugar, fat, additives, preservatives and/or artificial colors added.

What we eat has a big impact on our health, and ultra-processed foods like candy, soft drinks, pizza and chips do not contain enough of the beneficial nutrients that the body requires. The more ultra-processed foods we eat, the poorer the overall nutritional quality of our diet.

Ultra-processed foods are virtually everywhere: in vending machines, fast food restaurants, and grocery stores. In the meantime, But basic preparation and preservation techniques certainly don’t turn wholesome foods (like whole grains or frozen vegetables) into “junk.”

Understanding how foods get ultra-processed can be a helpful step in remembering to minimize our intake of them. Cooking at home also goes a long way toward reducing the amount of ultra-processed you consume. Restaurant meals (especially fast food) are notorious for tinkering with their recipes to achieve a certain flavor, rather than a nutrition profile.

However, there are cases when getting unprocessed, whole food isn’t that simple, whether it’s an issue of affordability, availability, or accessibility. “It has also been documented that stomach and colon cancers are increasing due to bad food habits.” The convenience factor has made people dependent on such foods, with an increase of mortality risks, premature death is an inevitable consequence of consuming such food habits.

The journal aims to cover integrative fields of food, nutrients and Metabolism.
